"THE EPICUREAN" Kate March

I LOVE to cook - anything! Savoury or sweet, three course roast dinners or vegan brownies.  I love both the art and science of cooking: I have taste and a nose for combining ingredients, herbs and spices, and spotting the missing component in just about any dish. Two things are very important to me - quality ingredients and community...For me Vital Awareness is not only about exposing the horrors of factory farming and the unhealthy state of our current food industry (about which I am very passionate) but it is also about bringing farmers and growers together with markets and restaurateurs - a community event: farm to table, which fortunately is the second part of our mission...I need to know my supplier, I need to know that the meat, dairy and eggs I am eating have been ethically and humanely produced.

ANIMAL WELFARE has always been a "cause" of mine - going back to my early teens....I have been appalled at the conditions of factory farming for a number of years and  stopped eating meat five years ago...January 2011 found me reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Saffran Foer - it blew my mind!  The facts I knew about factory farming paled into fairy stories by comparison to the brutal facts that Foer shared in his book. It was then I knew I had to do something...Hence the birth of VITAL AWARENESS...
In May 2011 I stopped eating animal products completely, I was done with dairy (conventional dairy is a heinous industry) and I was finding that eating fish was becoming a huge problem for me also - sourcing sustainable fish with the least by-catch was an issue...
SO here I am a  vegan supporting ethical meat and dairy production.  I don't believe that we are going to change a hard-core meat eating culture, and therefore promoting veganism isn't going to 'cut it' -  SO we have to change the way we farm, and raise our animals; and it all begins with awareness
